HISTORY OF MICHELIN TIRES
1889 marks Michelin’s foundation. Charles Terront used Michelin’s first removable inflatable tire to win the 1891 Paris–Brest–Paris.
Michelin built its first North American sales office in 1968 and quickly grew its share of the market. By 1989, it had 10% of the OEM tire industry for American tire manufacturers. In 1968, Consumer Reports recognized the advantages of the radial design, triggering a rapid fall in Michelin’s competitive innovation.
100% of US tires are radial tires. Michelin secured the OEM tire deal for the 1970 Continental Mark III, the first American vehicle with regular rollers.
Michelin Tires owns 90% of Hungary’s Taurus Tire and Poland’s Kormoran. In December 2018, the company bought Camso, a maker of off-road tires, tracks, and equipment, and in the following January, Multistrada Arah Sarana, an Indonesian tire producer. By June of that year, Michelin Tires already owned 99.64% of Multistrada.
